Kings XI Punjab were in superb form in the 2014 season of the Indian Premier League. Glenn Maxwell was in the form of his life, and he was scoring runs for fun. David Miller was at his destructive best, and the Maxwell-Miller duo was proving to be a nightmare for the other teams. On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders strived hard to reach the final, where they met KXIP. The Punjab side was clearly the favourite one, but an astonishing innings from Manish Pandey gave Kolkata its second IPL trophy.
Let’s get into this blog to see the details of a thrilling IPL final.

1st Innings Summary
KKR won the toss and invited KXIP to bat first. Manan Vohra scored the first boundary of the innings on the fourth delivery of the opening over. Then Virender Sehwag hit his first boundary on the final delivery of the second over. Umesh Yadav drew the first blood for the Kolkata Knight Riders by dismissing Sehwag in the 4th over. Captain George Bailey walked out to bat at #3, but the move didn’t pay off. He was bowled around his legs on the first delivery of Sunil Narine’s spell. Punjab were struggling at 30 for 2 after 5.1 overs.
Wriddhiman Saha came to the crease and started to build the innings with Manan Vohra. The KKR bowlers had kept them quiet, as the score was 92 after 13 overs. But the 14th over of the innings from Sunil Narine went for 19 runs and shifted all the momentum. The two right-handers then took the opposition’s bowling line up to the cleaners and picked 48 more runs in the next 3 overs. Piyush Chawla finally broke the 129 runs, and Manan Vohra skied one in the air. The bowler took the catch, and Vohra departed after playing a brilliant knock of 67 runs in 52 deliveries.
Glenn Maxwell came out to bat, but his stay lasted only one ball. His wicket was a major setback for KXIP as he was the best batsman of the tournament, and they needed him to accelerate at the death. But Wriddhiman Saha took the baton himself and brought up his sensational hundred in the penultimate over of the innings. He got there by hitting Sunil Narine for 6,4 and 6 on consecutive deliveries. He stayed unbeaten at 115 while facing just 55 balls. Punjab asked Kolkata to score 200 runs in their 20 overs to get their second IPL title.
2nd Innings Summary
KXIP clearly looked favorites at the halfway stage, and KKR needed a special effort to get to that target. Robin Uthappa started the chase by playing a delightful cover drive of the first delivery of the innings against Mitchell Johnson. But the fast bowler got his revenge by dismissing Uthappa three balls later. The captain Gautam Gambhir also played a couple of fine cover drives on the first deliveries of the second and third overs. The opening delivery of the 5th over also went to the boundary as Manish Pandey played a lofted straight drive of Lakshmipati Balaji.
KKR were looking solid at the end of the powerplay as the scorecard read 59 for 1. But Gautam Gambhir holed out on the first delivery after the field restrictions were lifted. Manish Pandey kept going at the same pace and brought up his 50 off just 31 balls. He got a reprieve as Punjab captain George Bailey dropped him at short cover. The chance was created by Axar Patel in the 12th over of the innings. Yusuf Pathan thrashed 4 sixes in his 22 balls stay to score 36 runs. When he got out, the target was reduced to 70 off 45. Shakib Al Hasan and Manish Pandey stayed together for 17 balls and scored 26 runs. KKR had The upper hand at that stage, but a brilliant run out of Shakib Al Hasan by George Bailey made things even.
With 32 needed off 22, Ryan ten Doeshcate was caught at long-on. Manish Pandey then whacked a 6 and a 4 to tilt the game back in KKR’s favour. But he fell on the last delivery of the 17th over while trying to hit another one out of the park. His stunning knock of 94 runs in 50 balls had put his team in a commanding position. The leg-spinner Karanveer Singh ended his spell with the figures of 4 for 54 in 4 overs. Mitchell Johnson took the 7th wicket of the innings by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav in the penultimate over of the chase.
The left arm quick had put his side ahead in the game as 11 were needed of the last 7 deliveries. But Piyush Chawla pulled him for a 6 on the final ball of his spell to turn things around. Chawla finished the game by hitting a boundary on the third delivery of the final over. His match-winning cameo included a four and a six in the five balls he faced. His 13-run knock helped Kolkata Knight Riders to edge ahead in a thriller. But it was Manish Pandey’s incredible innings that set things up for KKR.
