Peshawar Zalmi vs. Lahore Qalandars 23rd Match

The third double-header of PSL 2023 was played on Tuesday. Peshawar Zalmi toppled Lahore Qalandars in the first match to eliminate Karachi Kings. Then, Islamabad United defeated Multan Sultans to strengthen their chances of a top-two finish. Keep reading to see the match details and market changes.

Match 23: Peshawar Zalmi vs. Lahore Qalandars

Peshawar Zalmi 207 all out (Saim 68, Wahab 3/17) beat Lahore Qalandars 172 all out (Talat 63, Shaheen 52 & 4/31(↑52%)) by 35 runs.

After deciding to bat first, Peshawar Zalmi got off to a flyer. Saim Ayub dealt the world-class Lahore bowling attack with disdain and hammered 68 runs in just 36 balls. The opening partnership was 107 runs in 10.4 overs. Babar Azam(↓8%) anchored the innings with a 41-ball 50. Tom Kohler-Cadmore provided the required flourish at the end, and Lahore were asked to chase down 208 runs. Shaheen Shah Afridi(↑52%) bagged 4 scalps, while Haris Rauf, Rashid Khan(↓5%), and Zaman Khan got 2 wickets each.

In contrast, the Qalandars had a nightmare start as they lost 4 wickets for just 21 runs. Shaheen Afridi(↑52%) promoted himself yet again. He and Hussain Talat were going nowhere, as 158 runs were needed on 64 deliveries at one stage. But the two southpaws then launched an extraordinary attack. The next 43 balls went for 85 runs as Lahore looked for an unlikely win. Shaheen got out after scoring 52 off 36, while Talat smashed 63 off 37. Sikandar Raza tried with a 7-ball 20, but the task was too big. Lahore Qalandars were all out for 172, and Peshawar Zalmi won by 35 runs.

Turning Point of the Match

The only way Qalandars could have chased this target was by getting a solid start. Wahab Riaz got the wickets of Fakhar Zaman(↓9%) and Sam Billings on consecutive deliveries in his first over. Those two balls pretty much killed the game.

Match 24: Multan Sultans vs. Islamabad United

Islamabad United 209 for 8 (Faheem 51 & 1/38, Shadab 44 & 2/26(↑132%)) beat Multan Sultans 205 for 5 (Shan 75(↑50%), David 60) by 2 wickets.

Multan Sultans were invited to bat first by Shadab Khan(↑132%) in the second match of the day. Mohammad Rizwan(↑5%) and Shan Masood(↑50%) brought up 57 runs in the powerplay. The latter got out for 33 off 18. Rilee Rossouw(↓7%) departed cheaply as Tim David came to the crease. His 60 runs came in only 27 balls as Shan scored 75 off 50. Multan posted 205 runs on the board, as Shadab Khan(↑132%) and Mohammed Wasim got 2 scalps each.

Anwar Ali sent both the openers back to the dugout in the powerplay. Colin Munro and Shadab Khan(↑132%) steadied the ship with a 59-run stand in just 5 overs. Munro scored 40 off 21, while Shadab made 44 off 25. From there, Islamabad kept losing wickets regularly, and they were reduced to 159 for 7 in 16.5 overs.

With 47 needed off 19 balls, Faheem Ashraf took the baton. Waseem Jr. helped the cause by scoring 16(7), but the final over needed to go for 17. Faheem started the over by hitting a four and a six. Then, he picked a couple and followed it with another boundary to level the scores. He finished the match by hitting a four over mid-off. Faheem scored 51* off 26 and was declared Player of the Match.

Turning Point of the Match

The match was always in Multans’ hands, but it was just a stunning innings from Faheem Ashraf that turned the tide.
