Super Over in IPL History

The mega event carnival, the Indian Premier League, has been a game-changer in the world of T20 cricket. IPL has played a pivotal role in globalizing cricket, bringing in experience and young talent from around the world. Several matches have been played in the IPL which have etched their place in the history books. The league has witnessed 14 such matches which featured a super over.

Let’s have a detailed analysis of these games.

1. KKR vs RR, Cape Town, 2009

The first super-over was the IPL match, featuring KKR and RR. Rajasthan Royals batted first in this match and made 150 runs. Yusuf Pathan was the highest scorer for RR. He scored 42 runs from 21 balls. Ajantha Mendis was the most effective bowler for KKR with his two wickets at an economy rate of 4.75.

KKR came to bat in the second innings. Chris Gayle, the opener, got 41 runs off 33 balls. In the middle order, Sourav Ganguly made 46 runs from 30 balls. Kamran Khan took 3 wickets at an economy rate of 4.75.

KKR needed two runs to win the match on the last ball. However, they could only take a run on the final ball. The match was tied with KKR scoring 150 runs in the twenty overs.

The Super Over

KKR came to bat first in the super over. Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum entered the field to bat in the super over for KKR. RR gave the ball to Kamran Khan. Khan on the first two deliveries conceded only one run. The third ball by Kamran to Gayle was too wide and it was called so.

Kamran ran again to bowl the third ball and Gayle finally chipped this one over mid-on to score 4 runs. The next two balls were poor deliveries making it easier for Gayle to knock the ball to the boundary line.

Gayle aimed to go big again on the final ball. However, the luck was on RR’s side. A sharp catch was taken by Quiney, setting up a target of 16 runs for RR to chase.

Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan came to bat in the super over for RR. Ajantha was the bowler for KKR. Pathan smashed the first one for a six. On the second ball, KKR visibly looked under pressure as a difficult catch was dropped by Hodge.

Two more runs were added to the scoreboard of RR. On the third ball, Pathan hit a massive six over mid-wicket. RR needed two runs to win from the last three balls. Pathan hit a four on the next all to win the game for his team.

2. CSK vs KXIP, Chennai, 2010

Kings XI Punjab batted first in the game and scored 136 runs. Yuvraj Singh was the highest run-scorer for his team. He scored 43 runs off 28 balls. Muthiah Muralidaran took 3 wickets at an economy rate of 4.00.

CSK came to bat and the opening batsman, Parthiv Patel, anchored the innings with his 57 runs from 58 balls. Rusty Theron took 2 wickets for KXIP.

The scores were already level on the 4th ball of the last over, and Ashwin needed a run there to win the game for CSK. However, CSK failed to take a run in the next two balls due to an all-timer bowling performance by Irfan Pathan and the match went to the super-over.

The Super Over

Matthew Hayden and Albie Morkel came to bat for CSK in the super over. Rusty Theron who made his IPL debut in the match was set to bowl for KXIP. Morkel faced the first ball and it was top-edged to the third man for a run.

The second ball was faced by Hayden. However, he got bowled out. Suresh Raina came in for CSK and it was the last chance for CSK to score a few runs. On the third ball, Raina was able to get two runs.

Raina went big on the next ball, hitting a massive six. The fifth ball of the over was bowled. However, Raina got out and CSK put up a target of 10 runs to chase for KXIP.

Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh came in to bat for KXIP and Muralidaran was given the ball by CSK. The first ball was sent by Jayawardene for a six. Murali bounced back on the next one to get rid of Jayawardane.

Yuvraj missed an opportunity to score on the third ball and no run was added. On the fourth ball, Yuvraj pulled out a reverse sweep, going for four runs to win the game for KXIP.

3. SRH vs RCB, Hyderabad, 2013

RCB batted first in the match and got 130 runs on the board. It was a joint effort by Virat Kohli and Moises Henriques. Kohli scored 46 runs from 44 balls. Henriques added 44 runs off 40 balls. Ishan Sharma was the star bowler for SRH with his 3 wickets.

SRH had a rough time in the second innings, losing 5 wickets for 98 runs. However, Hanuma Vihari anchored the innings with his 44 runs. SRH was able to tie the match on the last ball and a super over was now about to be played.

The Super Over

Thisara Perera and Cameron White came to bat for SRH. Kohli, the skipper of RCB, handed the ball to Vinay Kumar. The first ball by Kumar was signaled to be a no-ball by the umpire and a run was added to the score of SRH. White and Parera scored a single run on the next two deliveries.

The next one was short of length delivery as White hit it for a massive six. White aimed to go big again. However, he could only run 2 runs here.

Cameron White did not miss it again as he hit the ball off the toe-end. It cleared the fielder for a six. Two more runs were added on the last ball. The scoreboard displayed a target of 21 runs for RCB to chase.

Gayle and Kohli entered the field to bat for RCB. Dale Steyn was the bowler for SRH. Gayle scored 2 runs on the first ball. The next one went for a run. Kohli was the one facing Steyn for the third ball. He laced it for four runs.

However, he could manage a run on the next one. Gayle was back and he launched the ball for a six. On the final ball of the over, Gayle needed 6 runs to level the scores once again. A great delivery by Steyn and Gayle could only manage to get a run. SRH won the super over.

4. RCB vs DD, Bengaluru, 2013

Another super over in IPL was played in the 2013 edition. It was an RCB vs DD game. The Delhi Daredevils batted first and made 152 runs. It was a joint contribution from a few batters in the top and the middle order. Kedar Jadhav made the most runs, scoring 29 off 16 balls. Jaydev Unadkat claimed 2 wickets for RCB.

RCB came to bat next and lost two batsmen on 26 runs. It was a solid partnership between Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers once again. Kohli made 65 runs off 50 balls.

From the other end, de Villiers added 39 runs with the help of 32 balls. RCB needed a run on the last two balls to secure a win. However, the brilliant bowling spell of Irfan Pathan ended the match in a tie.

The Super Over

Chris Gayle and AB de Villers came to bat in the super over for RCB. Umesh Yadav was the bowler for DD. The first ball to Gayle by Yadav was a run. De Villiers was ready to face the second ball.

However, the next two balls had the same fate, with de Villiers and Gayle taking back-to-back singles. On the fourth ball of the over, AB failed to connect the ball at all.

It was a dot ball. RCB had 4 runs on the board and had only two balls left. De Villiers knocked the next ball for six runs. The final ball of the over and de Villiers did not hold himself back and went for another six. RCB ended with 15 runs on the board.

David Warner and Ben Rohrer came in to bat for DD. Kohli gave the ball to Ravi Rampaul this time. Ravi got his wicket with Warner gone on the first ball of the over. Irfan Pathan faced the next ball. Irfan swung it over the square leg, hitting a boundary.

The third delivery was a dot ball. Pathan smashed another six on the fourth delivery. However, Rampaul conceded just a run on the next one. DD needed 6 runs to win the game on the last ball. Rohrer failed to hit big and got out. It was the victory moment for RCB.

5. KKR vs RR, Abu Dhabi, 2014

The next one is a KKR vs RR game from IPL 2014. Batting first, RR made 152 runs. Ajinkya Rahane had the most runs for his side. He made 72 runs from 59 balls.
Vinay Kumar got two batsmen out for KKR. The Kolkata Knight Riders had a decent start to their batting with Gautam Gambhir adding 45 runs from 44 balls.

Suryakumar Yadav scored a quick 31 runs off 19 balls. The game went on till the last over where it ended in a tie. The Aussie bowler, James Faulkner took 3 wickets.

The Super Over

SKY and Shakib Al Hasan were the batsmen to enter the field for KKR. Faulkner was given the ball again for his exceptional performance in the last over for RR. SKY tried to take a run on the first ball but could not get it in the end.

Manish Pandey was the next one to come. Pandeya made one run on the next two deliveries. Shakib struck the next one for a maximum and KKR had their first six.
The next one was a run again. Shakib was ready to face the final ball. However, he hit the ball down the ground to long on. Sanju Samson took the catch and KKR was restricted to 11 runs.

The Aussie duo, Steve Smith and Shane Watson were the batters for RR in the super over. Narine was going to bowl for KKR. The first ball featured a run by Watson. Smith whipped the next delivery through midwicket to register 2 more runs.

The next one went for another single. Watson was back again, facing Narine, as he clipped the ball past the boundary for four.

The next ball was a run again. RR needed 2 runs on the final ball to win. Smith pushed it through the extra cover to run two quick runs, winning the game for his team.

6. RR vs KXIP, Ahmedabad, 2015

RR came to bat first and registered a total of 191 runs. Ajinkya Rahane had the most runs. He got 74 runs off 54 balls. Axar Patel claimed 2 wickets for KXIP.

In the second innings, KXIP had a rough start. However, Shaun Marsh and David Miller made fifties to take the game to the finishing line. Miller got out on the second last ball and the game ended in a tie.

The Super Over

Once again, Marsh and Miller entered the field to bat for KXIP. Miller got out on the first ball by Chris Morris. Glenn Maxwell was the next batsman. The second ball went for a run. It was a no-ball and a four on the third one. Marsh hammered another delivery for a four.

There were two back-to-back boundaries by Marsh. He hit another one for a boundary, making it to the count of three. KXIP could not do much on the next two deliveries and the target of 16 was set up. Watson and Faulkner came to bat for RR and Mitchell Johnson was the bowler for KXIP.

Johnson got the wicket of Watson on the first ball. Smith came in and hit the boundary on a no-ball. He ran a single on the next one. However, Johnson got Faulkner out and won the Super Over for KXIP by 9 runs.

7. GL vs MI, Rajkot, 2017

The former franchise of the IPL, the Gujarat Lions, batted first in the game. GL made 157 runs and Ishan Kishan was the highest run scorer for his side. He registered 48 runs from 37 balls. Krunal Pandya had the best bowling figures for MI. He took 3 wickets at an economy rate of 3.50.

Parthiv Patel came to bat as an opener for MI. He hit 40 runs off 40 balls including a six and 9 fours. The last ball wicket by Irfan Pathan turned the game upside down. MI could not score the winning runs and a super over was played.

The Super Over

Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler were the batsmen for MI. GL handed the ball to Faulkner. Buttler took a run on the first delivery. Pollard went big on the next two deliveries, scoring a boundary and a six. He tried to smash another one out of the park but Faulkner got him out. Buttler could not add another run as he got out on the next ball.

GL had to chase 11 runs. Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum came in. Jasprit Bumrah was going to bowl for MI. Bumrah overstepped on the first one and the umpire signaled a no-ball. A perfect yorker on the next one as Finch took a run.

An extra run again as Bumrah delivered a wide ball. The next two deliveries included a dot ball and a run. McCullum got a run on the third delivery.
Finch could not add much as the next two deliveries featured a dot ball and a run once again. MI won the super over by 5 runs.

8. KKR vs DC, Delhi, 2019

Two years later, another game went on till the super over in IPL. KKR came in to bat first. Andre Russell was the highest run scorer with 62 runs from 28 balls. Dinesh Karthik registered a half-century. Harshal Patel got 2 batsmen out for DC.

Prithvi Shaw opened the innings for DC and played an unforgettable innings of 99 runs from 58 balls. Both teams ended the game with equal scores.

The Super Over

DC batted first in the super over sending Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Prasidh Krishna got the ball from KKR. Pant scored a single off the first ball. The next one was smashed for a boundary by Iyer. Krishna got Iyer out on the next delivery. Pant scored 2 runs on two consecutive balls. However, he could only take a single on the final ball of the over.

KKR had to chase 11 runs. Russell and Karthik were sent by KKR. DC gave the ball to Kagiso Rabada. Russell hit the first one for a boundary. However, he could have another run as the next two deliveries ended in a dot ball and a wicket.

Robbin Uthappa came to bat and scored a run on the next ball. Karthik ran for a single on the fifth delivery. DC needed 5 runs to win from the final ball. However, Uthappa could only add a run and DC won the super over by 3 runs.

9. MI vs SRH, Delhi, 2019

The next super over in IPL was played in 2019. The IPL 2019 featured two super over games. MI and SRH faced each other in Mumbai. Batting first, MI registered a total of 162 runs. Quinton de Kock got the most runs for MI as he scored 69 runs from 58 balls.

Khaleel Ahmed got 3 batsmen out for SRH. In the second innings, Manish Pandey was the highlight of the show as he made 71 runs from 47 balls. Jasprit Bumrah got 2 wickets along with Krunal and Hardik Pandya. The match was tied at a score of 162. Another super-over was played as SRH came to bat first as per the rules.

The Super Over

Manish Pandey and Muhammad Nabi came to bat for SRH. Bumrah bowled the first delivery and Pandey ran for a single. However, he got out while attempting to take the second one. Martin Guptill faced the next ball and scored a run.

Nabi knocked the next delivery for a six but soon after that, he got bowled out. MI had 9 runs to chase with Hardik Pandya and Pollard coming in.

Rashid Khan was taken to the cleaners as Pandya smashed him for a six. The next one went for a single. Pollard took two runs on the third ball as MI won with 3 balls still left.

10. DC vs PKBS, Dubai, 2020

2020 was a historical year for the fans as it did not only feature one super over in IPL. It witnessed four such matches which included super overs. Batting first, DC made 157 runs with Marcus Stoinis hitting 53 runs off 21 balls. Muhammad Shami took 3 wickets at an economy rate of 3.75 for PKBS.

Mayank Agarwal was the top run scorer of the second innings. He smashed 89 runs off 60 balls for PKBS. Ravichandran Ashwin took 2 wickets at an economy rate of just 2.00. PKBS leveled the score with DC.

The Super Over

It was an unforgettable memory for PKBS as they could only manage to score 2 runs in the super over. After managing to score 2 runs on the first ball, KL Rahul got out on the next ball of Rabada. Nicholas Pooran got out on the next one.

DC had to chase 3 runs. They got it done by taking a single and two runs on the two deliveries bowled by Shami.

11. RCB vs MI, Dubai, 2020

It was a high high-scoring game as RCB got 201 runs on the board. Both Stoinis and Finch made half-centuries. AB de Villiers, in the middle, hit 55 runs off 24 balls. Trent Boult got 2 batsmen out for MI.

The Mumbai Indians had a rough start. However, Ishan Kishan’s 99 runs took the game on till the last over. MI managed to tie the game with Pollard hitting a four off the last ball.

The Super Over

Pollard and Pandya came in to bat in the super over for MI. Navdeep Saini was given the ball. There were back-to-back singles on the first two deliveries. The third one was a dot ball for Pollard. However, getting his momentum back, he hit the next one for a boundary.

Saini got Pollard out the second last ball. Pandya was on the strike for the final ball but could only manage to take a run.

RCB had 8 runs to chase. Kohli and de Villiers came in to bat. Both the batters took a run on the first two deliveries bowled by Bumrah. De Villiers could not take a run on the next one. However, he hit a boundary on the short ball that came after it.

He took a run again on the fifth delivery. Kohli was back on the strike as he flicked the ball away for four runs. RCB won the game on the last ball.

12. KKR vs SRH, Abu Dhabi, 2020

Another super over was played in IPL 2020. KKR batted first and made 163 runs. Shubman Gill was the highest run scorer for the match. He made 36 runs off 37 balls.
T. Natarajan took 2 wickets for KKR. SRH came to bat and David scored most of their runs. He made 47 runs off 33 balls. Lockie Ferguson managed to take 3 wickets for KKR as the match got tied.

The Super Over

Warner and Bairstow walked out to bat for SRH. However, Fergurson got Warner out at a slower pace. Abdul Samad scored 2 runs for SRH on the next ball. Samad could not stay longer as Fergurson sent him back to the pavilion. KKR had to chase 3 runs in the super over.

KKR sent Morgan and Karthik to bat. Rashid Khan bowled the over for SRH. The first delivery was a dot ball. However, Morgan managed to take a single on the next one. Dinesh Karthik was the next man to face Rashid Khan.

He heaved the next delivery to the mid-wicket but it resulted in a dot ball. Karthik took 2 runs on the next one and a misfield helped KKR achieve the target on the same ball. KKR won the super over with 2 balls still left.

13. MI vs KXIP, Dubai, 2020

MI got 176 runs on the scoreboard. Quinton de Kock was the highest run scorer for MI. He got 53 runs off 43 balls. In the death overs, Kieron Pollard hit 34 runs from 12 balls. Arshdeep Singh and Muammed Shami took 2 wickets each for KXIP.

KL Rahul, the opener of KXIP, got 77 runs from 51 balls. He was the highest run scorer of the match. Jasprit Bumrah got 3 wickets for MI at an economy rate of 6.00. The game was tied and the super-over was to be played to decide the fate of the match.

The Super Over

Rahul and Pooran came in to bat for KXIP. Bumrah bowled the first delivery to KL Rahul. Rahul got a single and Pooran was the next one to face Bumrah. However, he got out on a full toss outside off.

Deepak Hooda was the next man to come in. The next two deliveries went for a single. It was an excellent yorker from Bumrah who delivered the fifth ball that Rahul dug out to the mid-wicket to secure 2 runs. At last, Bumrah got Rahul out on the final delivery of the over. MI had to chase 5 runs in the super over.

De Kock and Sharma came in for MI. Shmi was bowling for KXIP. MI managed to take a run on every ball of the first 3 deliveries. The next two balls featured a dot delivery and a run. However, Shami finally got the wicket of De Kock on the last ball.

As per the rules, another superover had to be bowled again. Pollard and Pandya came to bat for MI. Chris Jordan was the bowler for KXIP. MI scored 11 runs in the second super over.

The innings featured only one boundary. Agarwal and Gayle walked out for KXIP. The duo smashed two boundaries and a six to win the game.

The most recent super over in IPL is from the edition 2021. DC batted first in the game and made 159 runs. Prithvi Shaw was the highest run scorer for DC. He made 53 runs off 39 balls.

SRH came to bat and it was a joint effort in the batting by Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson. Williamson made 68 runs from 51 balls. Bairstow hit 38 runs off 18 balls. The game went on till the last ball and the super over was played.

The Super Over

Williamson and Warner came to bat for SRH. Axar Patel bowled the super over for DC. The first three deliveries featured a dot ball, a run, and a boundary. The next one was a dot ball again. On the final two balls, two runs were scored by SRH batters.

DC had to chase 8 runs. Rashid came to bowl for SRH while Pant and Dhawan were the batters for DC. The first 2 deliveries featured a run and a leg bye.

However, Pant hit a boundary on the third ball of the over. It was a dot ball again on the next one. Both Pant and Dhawan took a single on the last two deliveries. DC won the game on the final ball of the over.
